After more than 10 years of suspension, the importation of French apples and pears to the United States is once again underway. A first consignment of French apples has already arrived in the U.S., and many more are expected to follow.
The embargo was initially placed on French apples and pears by the American authorities after the detection of leaf mining insects that are considered as pests in the United States. In 2013, the French Ministry of Agriculture initiated bilateral negotiations with the U.S. with the goal of reopening exportation to the American market. To achieve this, French authorities implemented specific measures to secure the exportation of apples and pears and guarantee phytosanitary standards to the US authorities, such as pre-harvest culture inspections and cold treatment during transportation.
After conducting comprehensive audits of these new security measures, the Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved and signed a bilateral protocol in mid-2014, effectively reopening the American market.
